Is Self-discipline An Acquired Taste?by S. Wade Hansen One of our PFXers made a post in our forum and posed a great question about self-discipline. He said: "Is self-discipline in trading something that grows with time and experience?" Personally, I don't think your emotional inclinations to break your rules will ever go away. However, the longer you are able to keep your emotions in check and avoid breaking the rules, the easier it becomes to continue doing so.I think every trader has to experience a period during which she follows all of her rules and remains profitable before she is truly convinced of the benefits of following the rules. It is too easy to cheat a little bit here and there when you are in a slump. But if you can go through a slump, adhere to your rules, and come back out on top, you will have all the confidence you need to stick to your rules.I will make one caveat though. The rules you should consistently adhere to are your risk-management rules. If you have saddled yourself with a losing technical analysis trading system that has inherent flaws, stop trading it if it draws your account down too far.
